ROSENTHAL FULL RELAXATION EXPERIENCE

Meagan Rawlings

IMG_5222.jpg

Rosenthal Skincare was started 4 years ago by Michelle Cook, who has a lovely, tranquil beauty room in Herne Bay, where I was lucky enough to enjoy a Rosenthal 'Facial' last weekend. I say 'Facial' because this is what it's called on the website, but really it's nothing like a Facial, yet it's far more relaxing and beneficial for your well being - with some added anti-ageing benefits.

So I'm calling it the Rosenthal Full Relaxation Experience because that's what it was. The relaxation bit starts immediately with a hot foot bath, Michelle explains that there's something about putting your feet in water which instantly grounds you and has a soothing effect. Regardless of if you have been rushing around like a crazy lady all day or not - this is a delicious way to start.

Then once you're tucked in on the bed Michelle gently works over your face, head and neck pressing on pressure points along the Meridian Pathways. These pathways are where energy flows, however, they tend to become blocked due to stress and tension being held in the face.  Women especially hold a huge amount of tension in their faces, how many of you unknowingly clench your jaw, grind your teeth at night, frown a lot, squint at a computer screen all day and get tension headaches?

So how does anti-ageing fit in to this? As Michelle works over these Meridian Pathways she is releasing the blockages, in fact one side effect as energy is released is your stomach gurgles - mine started to do so instantly! With these blockages removed and the energy is once again free flowing, the muscles in the face relax and the hardness softens. How often do you look in the mirror and the person staring back doesn't even look like you? Especially during stressful times in your life. Michelle explains that you begin to look like you again, the glow comes back to your skin, your eyes have that sparkle and the contours of your face move back to where they should be.

It isn't a one stop quick fix, although I felt like I was walking on a cloud afterwards, Michelle recommends a session a week for a month and then monthly sessions after that for maintenance. If you are someone who usually books in a massage when you need to relax I would recommend giving this a try instead!

For every facial booking ( 30min,45min or 60min) before the end of July that mentions my blog, you get to choose two Rosenthal skincare minis from the signature range - free ( to collect at the time of your facial). To get in contact with Michelle phone her on 021 088 30942 or email michelle@rosenthalskincare.com

NOURISHING MASCARAS

Meagan Rawlings

Mascara comes in pretty close contact with your eyeballs, so it makes sense to use one that doesn't contain toxic ingredients. Here are 3 mascaras which don't contain any nasties.

W3ll People Expressionist Bio-Extreme Mascara - Black

My Current fave! This mascara is super black and adds volume to the lashes. It wears really well and is free from Parabens, coal tar, petrochemicals, GMO's, Dimethicone and more!

It’s A Long Story® Mascara Arbonne

This is another Mascara I highly recommend, it has a great wand applicator and thickens the lashes nicely - no clumps!

Illia Mascara

I have yet to try this one yet but I have read rave reviews! The ingredients list is as clean as they come and is definitely on my list to get next!

HOW TOXIC IS YOUR TOOTHPASTE?

Meagan Rawlings

So I guess toothpaste is something that I never thought too deeply about in regards to what's in it. All of us are taught from the get-go to NEVER swallow your toothpaste! And there is a very good reason why... It's full of harmful chemicals. The thing is, underneath the tongue is a part of the body where the absorption rate into the blood stream is fairly rapid, so even if you don't swallow your toothpaste, it's likely you'll still get a decent amount of the chemicals into your bloodstream.

What are the nasties to look out for?

Triclosan - It's linked to causing disruption to the Endocrine System (Thyroid) and antibiotic resistance. The EPA (Environmental Protection Authority) lists it as a pesticide and in September this year the FDA banned the use of Triclosan in soap... but it's still allowed to be in toothpaste? Go figure.

Sodium Laurel Sulphate (SLS) - This is the chemical which makes toothpaste foam up, it's also found in soap, shampoo, bleaching agents, detergents and industrial cleaners! The main problem with SLS is that it strips the mouth completely and makes it super vulnerable to absorbing the other chemicals that are in your toothpaste.

Fluoride - This is a controversial one as it is heavily advertised as preventing tooth decay but, it has been proven that fluoride is redundant in protecting adult teeth and can actually cause tooth damage when exposed to too much. It can cause brittle bones, stomach issues and skin irritation. In the States, all toothpaste containing Fluoride come with a Warning label on the box.

Diethanolamine (DEA) - Is found in foaming products and is a known hormone disrupter! It can react with other ingredients creating a potential carcinogen called NDEA, this has been linked with cancers of the stomach, esophagus, liver and bladder.

Saccharin - An artificial chemical sweetener which is a proven carcinogen, not something you want in your mouth.

So what are the alternatives? Turns out there are quite a few options on the market by Weleda, Lush, Arbonne and Grin. My go-to is the Red Seal SLS Free toothpastes as they also use Stevia as the sweetener as opposed to Saccharin. The Red Seal SLS Free toothpastes are pretty easy to find in New World and Pak n Save stores too. Just remember that because they don't contain SLS they don't foam up as much as what you're probably used to, but persevere because using non-toxic toothpaste is something you really want to adjust to.

THE BOTANIC ALCHEMIST SKINCARE REVIEW

Meagan Rawlings

I have been on the hunt for the past few weeks for a new facial oil, ideally one that isn't full of synthetic substances. I tell you, there are loads of beautiful boutique NZ skincare brands out there which is awesome to see! I'm not entirely sure how I found The Botanic Alchemist but I'm so glad I did.

They sell 3 products - Cleansing Oil, Exfoliating Powder + Masque and the Facial Elixir. The thing that caught my eye was the incredible ingredients list which certainly stood out compared to everything else I had looked at. I bought the Facial Elixir and Exfoliating Powder + Masque to try and the lovely Paula from The Botanic Alchemist popped in a sample of the Cleansing Oil too, so I have reviewed all 3 products below.

Cleansing Oil $35.95

I love to use a cleansing oil to wash my face because it breaks down makeup and cleanses your skin without disrupting the precious acid mantle which protects your skin.  This ensures better hydration and with the acid mantle left intact your less likely to suffer from skin irritation and breakouts caused by bacteria. The thing I love about this cleansing oil is the subtle lemon scent and it's ability to remove all my makeup, if you haven't used a cleansing oil before please note you do generally need to use a soft face cloth to remove it, especially if you are removing makeup.

Ingredients - Sweet Almond Oil*, Hazelnut Oil, Aloe Vera Oil*, Castor Oil*, Avocado Oil*, Vitamin E, Grapefruit Essential Oil, Blood Orange Essential Oil, Lemon Essential Oil, May Chang Essential Oil*. *Organic Ingredient

Exfoliating Powder + Masque $29.95

When it has ingredients like Moroccan Clay, Pineapple Powder and Pumpkin Powder, how could I not give this a try. It's a dry, loose powder that you add water to in the palm of your hand. Use as a mask to help draw out impurities or massage all over to exfoliate off dead skin cells. The texture is super fine and won't scratch your skin.

Ingredients - Rhassoul Clay (Moroccan Clay), Organic Rice Powder, Colloidal Oatmeal, Coconut Milk Powder, Pineapple Powder, Pumpkin Powder, Grape Seed Extract.

Facial Elixir $49.95

I feel like I've hit a gold mine with this Facial Elixir, it's just so beautifully luxurious. I have seen such a big difference in my skin since using it, my skin is much more hydrated, glowing and my scarring from breakouts has diminished. It feels incredibly nourishing and healing for my skin and the added bonus is it has such a mild smell which is not always the way with natural products. Super impressed! There is 15 gorgeous mineral and essential oils packed into this bottle, what a steal for under $50.

Ingredients - Gotu Kola, Calendula, Marshmallow Infused Sunflower Oil*, Safflower Oil*, Apricot Oil*, Jojoba Oil*, Hemp Seed Oil*, Marula Oil*, Rosehip Oil*, Pomegranate Oil, Evening Primrose Oil*, Avocado Oil*, Vitamin E, Carrot Seed Essential Oil*, Neroli Essential Oil, Frankincense Essential Oil*, Ylang Ylang Essential Oil*. *Organic Ingredient

BENEFIT BROW PRODUCTS

Meagan Rawlings

I was super lucky to be invited to an exclusive Benefit Brunch recently with 3 other gorgeous Bloggers - Ash Owens, Christina from Freckles and Blush and Kate Manihera. At brunch we had the chance to play with all 10 of Benefit's newly released Brow Products, and I have to say I was mega impressed. There is literally something for everyone in regards to different types of formulas and application but also with the great colour range. At first glance it can be overwhelming trying to figure out which product would be best for you, but I would highly recommend popping into a Benefit counter and getting one of the girls to match you up to your perfect Brow Product. At the end of the brunch I chose 4 things to take with me and I reviewed them for you below.

Goof Proof Brow Pencil $42

This will be my every day go-to brow product. It's super quick and easy to use and extra handy that it has a spooly on the end to brush through your brows. This Brow Pencil is a waxy formula which usually I don't like, but this one is super soft which means no dragging across your skin. The unique shape of the pencil enables you to shade in your whole brow but still get definition along the top and bottom edges. Here is a before and after on my brows, I have Feather Stroke Tattoo in my brows but still like to use a product in them for more definition. Goof Proof has a 12hr wear and is waterproof.

Ka-Brow! $42

LOVE THIS! Introducing a Brow Pomade which is much more user friendly than the Anastasia Beverly Hills Dip Brow Pomade. Don't get me wrong I love the ABH Dip Brow but I feel like it's more of a Makeup Artist product and I don't tend to recommend it for my clients. Benefit has nailed the formula with this one (and the epic packaging which includes a brush), it has more of a powdery feel to it and has a 24hr wear plus it's waterproof. This is the perfect product if you like a more defined brow, I found it gave sharper lines than with the Goof Proof Pencil and this is what I would use for when I get dolled up for a night out. Check out the before and after below.

Gimme Brow $45

Cutest. Brush. Ever. All cuteness aside though this little guy does a big job of adding fullness to the brow hairs through tiny fibres in the formula. I like to use this for a super natural look on days when I just wanna rock BB Cream and Mascara. This would be perfect for someone who already has semi full brows and wants to even out the colour and add volume.

Ready Set Brow! $42

I have never seen such an amazing Clear Brow Gel brush before! Most Brow Gel wands are so big and chunky that you barely get any product in between the hairs, this one however, is incredible. It has two sides with two different bristle lengths and the formula is mega long lasting. I use a brow gel in conjuction with Ka-Brow! and Goof Proof Brow Pencil to make sure it all stays in place no matter what (it's also waterproof). This is now a staple for my kit too.

Ok so I think I said the word 'Brow' about 100 times but hopefully this review was a little bit helpful!

LITTLE HONEY FLAWLESS BRONZING KIT

Meagan Rawlings

It's about time I did a proper review on Little Honey seeing as how I have had it in my makeup kit all season for use on my Brides when dreaded spray tan disasters occurred... there were many. As well as being the best fake tan out it is also incredible at fixing fake tan faux pas (there was a better f word but probs not appropriate!) hence why I carry it in my kit!

There are a myriad of fake tans on the market at varying price points and it can be a minefield choosing a good one. I thought the easiest way to explain how good it was, was let you make your own comparisons against previous tanning products you've tried. Here is a list of pros, amazingly I couldn't think of a single con!

Flawless Bronzing Kit RRP $50 includes 120ml Flawless Bronzing Mist and Flawless Blending Glove

* The 120ml bottle provided me with 12 (or more?) full body applications, that equals about $4 per tan.

* It has a pleasant vanilla/honey scent - no nasty fake tan smells here.

* It has a very small amount of transfer onto your sheets if you don't manage to wash the excess off before bed.

* The packaging is to die for, I love how it looks sitting on my vanity in the bathroom.

* When I use it I hold my glove hand in the basin when spritzing the mist so there is minimal mess to clean up.

* My hand doesn't get covered in fake tan because the glove is lined with thin plastic.

* It doesn't wear off in patches! This is a biggie for me as I think there's nothing worse than going patchy for the next week after your application. This means if you need to re tan a few days later, just use a scrub in the shower like normal and re apply.

* The bottle is nice and compact, easy to travel with.

* It's made in NZ, is free from Parabens and is cruelty free.

* It dries in seconds and doesn't go sticky!

So many positives and zero negatives, it's no wonder Priceline in Australia snapped it up to stock throughout their stores the minute they saw it. It will be available in OZ from the 22nd August and will be sold in all 400+ Pricelines. In NZ you can buy from selected retailers and on the website www.littlehoney.co.nz

FREELANCING TIPS

Meagan Rawlings

Finally! Some talented people have created a place where you can request a makeup appointment for an event, wedding or school ball and are shown all the available makeup artists in your area. Beauty Book! It’s such an awesome concept that I’m super excited to be signed up to. As a freelancer whats better than having more exposure? And increase your chances of booking up your calendar with paying clients… So with the launch of Beauty Book it got me thinking. What’s some advice I can give for becoming a successful Freelance Makeup Artist, here are my top 10 tips.

1.
Practice, practice, practice! Grab anyone and everyone who’s willing to let you put makeup on their face and practice different makeup looks on them. Try and use a broad range of ages so you get used to different skin types and textures. There is now not a skin type, eye shape, ethnicity, age or personality type which phases me when I go to a makeup job and I owe that to the 8 years I have been working in the industry. Making mistakes along the way can be a blessing in disguise because you learn a great deal from them and then know how to tackle the situation better in the future. Also be open to receiving honest feedback from your practice models so you can fine tune your skills.

2.
Customer service is important. Having your makeup done by a Makeup Artist is a luxury service, treat it like so. Be prompt when replying to emails and messages and don’t just talk money, it’s nice when you take an interest in your client and why they might be booking you.

3.
Always have a goal in mind and make sure every decision you make is pushing you closer to that goal. Being able to look back and tick off all the goals you have achieved is super motivating and makes you realise that you can actually do anything you put your mind to. My last goal was to become a full time freelancer from November last year and I only really just realised that I’ve achieved my goal for the past 6 months! Time to up my game…

4.
Keep learning. I am constantly up-skilling, learning new trends, and researching what’s going on in the makeup world. If you're really passionate about being a makeup artist then this won’t feel like a chore. It’s important to stay current in an industry that is forever changing.

5.
Learn the gift of the gab. Teach yourself to multi task by holding a conversation with your client and doing their makeup at the same time, it’s easier said than done. Being able to chat while you’re working is actually a great way to put your client at ease, especially on a big day like her wedding.

6.
Network. Form relationships with other freelancers, it can be a lonely job at times not having work mates. It’s nice to have a group of like minded friends to bounce ideas off, keep you motivated and to be able to pass jobs on to when you're already booked. It’s a way better service to your client to be able to recommend another artist you know is going to do a great job.

7.
Don’t sit back and expect jobs to just come to you. It’s easy to justify a lack of work by coming up with a myriad of excuses, trust me I’ve been there! Once you realise that you're the only person who can influence your work load and that there are plenty of things you can be doing to get your name out there, then you can start working on ideas to promote your business.

8.
Be authentic. Develop your own signature style. It’s so nice when people start to book you because they have fallen in love with your work and not because you were the first person they clicked on in a google search.

9.
Use social media to your advantage. Spend time planning your social media content and only post pics that you're super proud of. Social media takes up a lot of time and effort but eventually it will have it’s rewards.

10.
Take advantage of the new booking platform Beauty Book. I wish something like this existed when I first started freelancing, it surely would have helped me gain more clients, especially in the early days!

MECCA $500 VOUCHER UNBOXING

Meagan Rawlings

Recently I was insanely lucky to win a $500 voucher from Beauty Book NZ! I could not believe my luck, MECCA is literally my happy place...it's makeup heaven!

Usually when I shop at MECCA it's to replenish my kit. If you have ever had your makeup done by me or attended one of my lessons you will know that NARS Sheer Glow is my holy grail foundation, and yes they sell NARS at MECCA. They also sell the Hourglass Mineral Veil Primer, Ambient Lighting Powder and the Chantecaille Lipstick in Camelia. All kit essentials!

This time however, I wanted to be selfish and just buy things that I wanted for myself for once. I tell you, it's harder than you think for a Makeup Artist to shop for beauty products without their clients and kit in mind. It took me a few weeks to finalize what I truly wanted and here it is...

Origins Drink Up Intensive Overnight Mask $44

I know this has always been a cult product among beauty bloggers so it was about time to give it a try. It smells great and isn't greasy, it's one of those masks you apply to your face and it just soaks in to your skin overnight. When I woke up my skin looked super plump and hydrated, job well done.

Origins Deep Cleanser with White Tea $42

This one was actually for my partner, I personally won't use foaming cleansers on my skin because I feel like they are too harsh. He however loves it and once boys are using a product they like, they don't change. If you work in retail on a beauty counter, males are the most loyal clients!

Eve Lom Cleanser 100ml $145

So this is what I'm talking about when it comes to a cleanser! On first glance it looks like a thick paste but once massed into the skin it changes to more of an oil texture. Its amazing for dissolving makeup an doesn't leave your skin feeling greasy. The was another cult product I had heard great things about and it didn't disappoint. It comes with a muslin cloth which you use to remove the cleanser by steaming your face and then wiping off. Doing this had a really nice exfoliating effect without scratching my skin, super happy with this purchase.

BYREDO La Tulipe EDP 50ml $192

I have loved this perfume for the longest time and I am so happy to now have it in my possession. As the name suggests it is based on the beautiful Tulip flower. This super soft, floral fragrance has top notes of Rhubarb, Cyclamen and Freesia, a heart of Tulip and a woody base. Perfection!

NARS Lip Gloss in Ophelia $47

I just wanted an everyday, perfect to keep in the handbag, gloss. I chose Ophelia which is a sheer strawberry/ mauve colour as it's one that will go with everything. It's nothing to really anything to rave about but it's exactly what I was looking for and it's super pretty!

NARS Sheer Glow Foundation in Barcelona $82

As I said before I love this foundation and have yet to try one that rivals it. Barcelona is too dark for me on it's own but I mix it with Santa Fe to get my perfect colour. I actually always blend foundation colours for my clients too as I feel like you can get a better match by mixing.

MECCA COSMETICA Lip De-Luscious Night Lip Treatment $38

Do yourself a favour and buy this. It is sooo nourishing for your lips and is the perfect night time treat (imagine the Origins Overnight Mask + this lip treatment. Amazing!). This is definitely not one of those lip balms that dry your lips out (I'm looking at you Lucas Papaw) and even though it says night treatment it's totally legit for day time usage. This would be amazing for anyone on Roacatane too.

So thank you again to Beauty Book NZ, make sure your following them on instagram for updates on their amazing giveaways. PLUS if your a Makeup Artist you are going to want to submit your email address on their website, very exciting plans are being announced soon!! www.beautybook.co.nz

BROW PRODUCTS REVIEW

Meagan Rawlings

Groomed brows are a must these days and there is a plethora of products on the market you can buy. I have a fair few brow products in my kit which are a variety of colours and textures (powder, pomade, pencil) so I thought I'd give my thoughts on each one.

Joey Healy Brow Powder in Cashmere

Brow powders are an easy and safe option to use, they give a lovely soft result. As a rule of thumb all powders tend to go darker and warmer on the skin so always choose a lighter colour than you would think. The Joey Healy Brow Powder is very neutral in colour which means it can work with almost any hair colour but the amazing thing about it, is that it's waterproof! For those of you that struggle to keep their brow pencil or powder on all day then this would be a great long wearing option. The texture is light, silky and has an excellent colour pay off. I always use this with my Anastasia Beverly Hills #12 brush. You can purchase this in store from Lash Noir

Ardell Pro Brow Defining Kit

I was lucky enough to be sent this fantastic brow quad recently, it actually comes with a brow wax and brow brush/ spooly too. There are 4 colours in the quad so there is bound to be something for everyone, the colour I use on myself is the bottom right colour and I love it! It just makes my brows look so good and it's perfect for when I'm wearing minimal makeup because it doesn't look super over done. The quad includes a highlight shade for under the brow which is convenient and all the shades can double as eyeshadow. The brow wax comes in a "pencil style" so you can sharpen it. It's actually the first time I have used a wax in my brows and to be honest I prefer a clear brow gel but it does do the job in regards to holding your hair in place.  You can purchase one here

Anastasia Beverly Hills Dip Brow Pomade in Dark Brown

This has to be one of the most well known brow products on the market and is the highly popular with YouTubers and instagram makeup artists due to the precise result you get. I prefer to use dipbrow when I am going out and have more makeup on. I love this product though, and it is super long lasting. If you're brave enough to give this a go then I recommend only using the smallest amount to start with and buy the Anastasia Beverly Hills #12 brush to use with it. Get the pomade here and the Brow brush here

Anastasia Beverly Hills

Another cult product, Brow Wizz is a super thin crayon that can be wound up. This is perfect for people who have sparse brows to help fill in the gaps. Apply this in short strokes to mimic the hairs for a super natural look. You can purchase it

IT COSMETICS BYE BYE UNDER EYE CONCEALER

Meagan Rawlings

Photo 12-01-16, 3 50 09 PM.jpg

Under eye concealer is such a key product whether you are wearing a full on smokey eye or just mascara. The skin around the eye area is thin and delicate, everyone has some degree of darkness there so don't feel like your the only one! Make sure your getting enough sleep and drinking loads of water which will help with brightening up under the eyes naturally, otherwise don't fret. We have concealer!

I had heard a lot of Bloggers and YouTubers raving about the It Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye concealer so I thought I might as well give it a try. I ordered mine off www.beautylish.com with a few other products so my shipping was free and it arrived the week after.

So the product itself comes in a squeezable tube which makes life easy and a little bit goes a long way, ideal. The texture of this concealer is super moisturizing but it sticks really well to your skin and it is full coverage. It definitely needs to be set with powder but that's not a bad thing, too many concealers are really drying and end up looking cakey and patchy. The colour is more on the pink side but is neutral enough to wear on it's own, where as with my Bobbi Brown Corrector which is pink based, it needs a yellow based concealer over top to balance out the colour.

Application wise I first applied with my finger by dotting it on and then used a damp Beauty Blender to blend it out, because the texture is quite sticky the dampness of the Beauty Blender helps it to move the product better and also to look more even. Below is a before and after of my eye (the after is not retouched) and also a colour comparison swatch.

Swatches Left - Right; NARS Creamy Concealer in Custard, It Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye Concealer in Neutral Medium, Bobbi Brown Correcter in Bisque.

As you can see when they are side by side the Bye Bye Under Eye is a mix of the two other colours. I normally use Bisque to correct the blue under tone in the corner of my eyes and then NARS concealer over top, being able to use just one product is much easier. In the after picture of my eye I have set the concealer with the Laura Mercier Translucent Loose powder and also concealed my lid with the NARS Creamy Concealer to cancel out the redness (excuse my naked eye!) If your unsure where to put your concealer, I wrote a blog post with photos of how and where the best place is to apply it here.

MASCARA REVIEW

Meagan Rawlings

Photo 5-01-16, 3 51 18 PM (1).jpg

I never, ever leave the house without Mascara on my lashes. If I don't wear mascara, my eyes look bald! I have quite the array of mascaras in my possession as I am always on the hunt for the best, so I thought I would show you the results of each one and share my opinion. Enjoy!

Loreal Paris Miss Manga Party

Worst Mascara I've ever tried! Seriously bad, the brush is rubber and has very short bristles, so basically there is nothing to help comb the product through your lashes and your left with mega clumpy and heavy lashes. Such a shame because I am a big fan of Loreal mascaras and the original Miss Manga is quite good.

Loreal Paris Volume Million Lashes

This mascara gives quite a natural finish, the brush combs the lashes really well so you get more length and don't get any clumps but unfortunately it means you can't build any volume (despite the word Volume being in the name?) It's just a bit meh and I wouldn't re purchase.

Bobbi Brown Smokey Eye Mascara

LOVE. So this is my absolute favourite mascara at the moment! It has the blackest pigment and you can build up the volume easily. The brush isn't the usual type that I go for ( I normally like rubber bristles) but this brush gets right in amongst your lashes to coat them all and help separate them as well. The other plus to 'Luxury brand' mascaras is that they are much more gentle on your lashes, I find consumer brands dry rock hard and are a lot harder to remove.

Bare Minerals Lash Domination

Ok so if Miss Manga Party is the 'Cake Face' of the Mascara world then Bare Minerals Lash Domination is the 'Au Naturel'. I'm not a fan, not because its barely visible on the lashes but because the hard rubber brush hurts every time it touches the part of my eyelid where my eyelashes grow out... Also I've never had a mascara end up under my eyes throughout the day as much as this one.

Dior Diorshow Iconic Extreme

Such a beautiful mascara! This comes in a close second to my Bobbi Brown Smokey Eye Mascara, it gives lovely soft, feathery lashes and the volume is build-able. The brush has soft rubber bristles which disperse the product perfectly. It is definitely more of a high end price point but you get what you pay for with this one. I would re purchase this.

I hope you found this review helpful, the most important thing when wearing mascara is making sure you remove it properly each night. I always us a waterproof makeup remover, even though I never wear waterproof mascara, because it has the oil in it which helps to soften everything and minimize the amount of rubbing involved :)

THE SKIN EDIT

Meagan Rawlings

Screenshot 2015-11-29 15.47.17.png

While there are a rare few who are genetically blessed with perfect skin, if you’re anything like me you need to put in a fair bit of effort to achieve great results (am I right?!). If your skin is playing up and nothing seems to be working, 9 times out of 10 it comes down to the quality of your diet. I suggest asking yourself: am I drinking enough water? Am I stressed? Beautiful skin starts on the inside.

To help you achieve beautiful skin on the outside, though, I’ve made it super easy and categorized the skin into three types: hydrated, dehydrated and dry. Very few adults have a ‘true’ oily skin yet so many people use products that are far too harsh (Clearasil or Garnier, anyone?). Dehydrated skin is probably the most common, with 90% of faces I do makeup on lacking moisture. Dry skin is quite common, too, and it can be hard to find products that nourish dry skin properly.

Here are some details on each category along with my personal product recommendations. I’ve also added a section for breakouts, which can be particularly annoying during change-of-season!

HYDRATED - Your skin is most likely quite even in colour and you don’t get super oily or dry. Your skin feels plump and has a glow to it.

Product recommendations - Keihls Ultra Facial Cream or Lotion

                                             - Kiehls Calendula Facial Toner

                                             - Eve Lom Cleanser

                                             - Perricone MD Eye Cream

DEHYDRATERD - If you work in air conditioning, chances are you’re dehydrated. First, make sure you drink loads of water throughout the day. If you’re not working in air-con, you still could be dehydrated, or more commonly described as “combination” skin type. You may suffer from dryness (in the morning) and get oily (3pm) throughout the day, especially in the T-Zone. Don’t mistake an oily T-Zone for oily skin! The problem with products for ‘combination’ skin is that they are often oil free and don’t add much hydration, which actually can exacerbate the problem by stripping the precious oil mantle that protects your skin. Don’t be afraid of skincare containing oils, they are extremely healing and balancing for the skin.                                                     Product recommendations - Janesce Rose Cleanser

                                            - Janesce Perfecting Gel

DRY - Your skin probably feels like the Sahara Desert, there ain’t a drop of oil in sight. Skin like this needs extra love and care because it tends to be thinner and ages faster. Try and get more healthy fats into your diet such as Avocado, Coconut oil and some good quality Fish oil capsules.

Products recommendations - La Mer Cream

Breakouts - Pimples are a common occurrence and can appear for a variety of reasons. Make sure you remove all makeup before bed and still wash your face even if you wore nothing that day, it’s amazing the amount of dirt and grime that accumulates. Something I see quite often is ladies complaining about getting breakouts in areas of the face they usually wouldn’t get them. Upon asking when the last time they washed their foundation brush or sponge it’s normally not often! If you have breakouts and use a foundation brush/ sponge, wash it with hand soap before putting it back on your face the next day or you will most likely spread the bacteria everywhere. If you do get breakouts, please don’t buy acne fighting face wash as it will not only dry the crap out of the pimples but your entire face too. Try to just spot treat, I like to use a soaked cotton tip with a tiny amount of tea tree oil to dab on spots.

Skincare is such a tricky thing, huh? We all know skin can change day-to-day so if in doubt, ask an expert for advice. If you have any skin concerns or tips to share, comment below.
